The Omutoma Tree is an evergreen tree scientifically known as Ficus natalensis or the natal fig. The trees can grow up to 2m in diameter with upright branches that stretch 12-30meters, and aerial roots that hang from the branches and the base of the trunk. It is well known as one of the fastest-growing indigenous trees in Uganda, maturing in just 2-5years and lasting for over 100 years.

At full capacity, Marakwet Organic Farm will be a major employer of men and women from the surrounding communities, improving livelihoods and enhancing prospects through skills transfer and training.

The Omutoma Tree Project is a CSR Initiative that will demonstrate legitimate commitment in protecting the ecological environment and conservation in this area of Uganda, while also involving and benefitting the local communities.

With oil exploration and impending extraction in this part of Uganda it is very important to have projects that protect the natural environment.

Because the Mutuba bark is harvested without harming the tree, bark-cloth is an environmentally-friendly, renewable material that is gaining popularity for use in a variety of areas including fashion, accessories, housewares, interior design, and art. The Marakwet Mutuba project will act as a pilot cluster for the Fort Portal region, transferring skills across from Buganda, preserving cultural heritage and providing livelihoods to the rural community. If successful, similar clusters can be replicated in other districts, creating sustainable jobs throughout the country.
